Ancestry DNA
Has anyone tried this? Just seen a tv ad, you send off for a kit, send back a saliva sample, and it tells your your detailed ethnicity and links you to distant relatives and that.

Sounds quite interesting, but also could be a load of bollocks.

How does it work?

£79 by the way.

Re: Ancestry DNA
About AncestryDNA™

1. What is AncestryDNA?
AncestryDNA is a new DNA testing service that utilizes some of the latest autosomal testing technology to revolutionize the way you discover your family history. This service utilises advanced DNA science to predict your genetic ethnicity and help you find new family connections. It maps ethnicity going back multiple generations and provides insight into such possibilities as: what region of Europe are my ancestors from, or am I likely to have East Asian heritage? AncestryDNA can also help identify relationships with unknown relatives through a dynamic list of possible DNA member matches.

AncestryDNA is part of the Ancestry group of companies. If you are not already registered with Ancestry you will be required to register with Ancestry when you proceed to purchase a DNA kit. You will need to retain your registration details in order to access your results. If you are already registered with Ancestry simply enter your log on details when prompted to do so.

2. What do my results tell me?
Your AncestryDNA results include information about your genetic ethnicity estimates and identifies potential DNA matches, linking you to others who have taken the AncestryDNA test. Your results are a great starting point for more family history research, and it can also be a way to dig even deeper into the research you've already done.

3. What technology is behind this new service?
The AncestryDNA test uses microarray-based autosomal DNA testing, which surveys a person's entire genome at over 700,000 locations, all with a simple saliva sample. Additionally, the new online interface integrates state-of-the art tools for you to utilize your DNA results for family history research.
4. How is this DNA test going to help me with my research?

Your DNA may hold information to help make new discoveries about your family's past, your cultural roots, as well as confirm information in your family tree. Using your DNA test in combination with an Ancestry subscription (which is a separate service offered by other Ancestry group companies) gives you hints that can guide your investigations and connect you with new relatives. These new relatives that you discover may have additional information, a piece of your family story to tell or photos to share.

Your DNA test results also provide information that's more relevant and recent—targeting your family history a few hundred or even a thousand years ago, as compared to the Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA tests, which have a 10,000 to 50,000 year time focus.

6. How does the new AncestryDNA test differ from other DNA tests?
It's more comprehensive. Unlike the Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA test, AncestryDNA uses an autosomal DNA test that surveys a person's entire genome at over 700,000 locations. It covers both the maternal and paternal sides of the family tree, so it covers all lineages. The Y-DNA test only reflects the direct father-to-son path in your family tree, and the mtDNA test only reflects the direct mother-to-child path in your family tree. Learn more about the differences between the DNA tests here.

The test is gender neutral. Both men and women can take the AncestryDNA test and are tested in the same way for the same number of markers providing the same level of detail in the results.

It predicts your recent genetic ethnicity. Thanks to advances in DNA technology we're able to compare your DNA to samples from around the world, to find out more about your family's background and ethnic history—not just ancient history, but the people and places that matter to you.

Enhanced DNA matching. Unlike the Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA tests, the new AncestryDNA autosomal test looks at a much broader range of your DNA, which helps identify matches throughout your entire family tree—along both your paternal and maternal sides.
The information is more relevant and recent—targeting your family history a few hundred or even a thousand years ago, as compared to the Y and mtDNA tests, which have a 10,000 to 50,000 year time focus.

Think there are different types. One that goes by the fathers side and one by the mother's etc.

Re: Ancestry DNA
I have just had mine back from MyHeritage. You send of get a swap kit then send it back to USA. They email you and keep you up to date. Process works pretty well. Quite expensive you have to pay postage to the USA and not sure how accurate the results are. Mine came back 63% English, 33% Celtic and about 3.5 Spanish/Portuguese. My Mum was born in London and is English. Think she has one Great Granmother who was Irish. My Dad was Born in Ireland and is Irish. Some of his family have done some research and they have been in Dublin for well over 100 years with only Irish heritage

Re: Ancestry DNA
3/4 grandparents = MICKS

My dad's dad was an east Londoner (as is he). My dad's mum was also a MICK. There's a bit of WOP on the male side too but don't mention that.

Can't say that I'd want to waste money on digging any further although, to be fair, it would be interesting to see.

I got as far as ETHNIITY ESTIMATES and POTENTIAL DNA matches

In other words, it's all guesswork and the chances of finding a decent match I'd imagine are worse than slim

Re: Ancestry DNA
It’s interesting but is it worth the money? Probably not. I know I’m half Irish half English. My English Grandad was dark skinned but i would guess the Iberian came from my Paddy side

Re: Ancestry DNA
Virtually all Paddys will have a healthy dose of 'Wop' (I thought Dago, I must say, Wops are Italian?). This also coincides with high levels of Neanderthal DNA which is absolutely not a bad thing. Wiki is your friend for verification.

English all the way back to my great great grandfather, so I'm a purebred. My Aunt (father's sister) did all the research and found photos of 6 generations of us.

Lily Hammer did one of these , can't recall his answer apart from he was a lot more mixed than he thought he was.

Re: Ancestry DNA
I might investigate this. I'm fairly sure I'm made up only of Welsh and irish stock but it'd be interesting if I turned out to be part Somalian, or Jewish or summat.

Re: Ancestry DNA
this is bollocks really......it says that UK as a whole has 22% "Irish" ancestry but fails to point out that the Celtic gene has been present in the UK since of course before the Anglo Saxons arrived. Therefore you could have not one ancestor ever step foot in Ireland but youve still got "Irish genes" because you have Celtic DNA from intermarriage since 1500 years ago....

Re: Ancestry DNA
I remember watching this DNA programme once where this obviously slightly racist white Anglo- Saxon looking English woman was told she had 8% east European in her genetics, the area of the genetics being Turkey, she looked disgusted and shocked.

I am sure if God could come to the world and have a word he would think those who say they are pure and white very retarded, and lets be honest he would hardly be wrong.
It is very clear to see with some dumb cunts that being white is all they have got in life I can understand culture and religion etc being very important, but ones colour?.
Even on this thread some posts are throwing terms around like "pure" and "Wop", these terms one would think should have died with Hitler.

My lot were all working class shitkickers from Ireland and Wales. Probably won't be much DIVERSITY in there.
Although my grandfather claimed to be somehow related to Ivor Novello.
But he was apparently a drunken bollocks merchant.

Re: Ancestry DNA
Get a brilliantly pure German man with big blue eyes blonde hair and an athletic build he can also be six foot two what do you see?, then chop one of his legs off and then an arm, that brilliant pure German to nearly all becomes a disabled man you forget that they are white German or pure.
What does this tell us?, it should tell you that being pure has no importance at all and is a thing that has been taught to you by your family in other words it's all in your head and in reality has no significance.
When you watch Lanzini or even Messi when have you ever analyzed that they are olive skinned ?.
Genetics can be very Important but education should never be overlooked.
